Resist dyeing is a traditional dyeing technique, used in many parts of the world, where parts of the fabric are bound out of the dye, resulting in patterns.
The scale and artistic style of the patterns can be varied from anything between small and very detailed to large-scaled and abstract, giving a lot of freedom to artistic expression for the artisan. With so many variations possible, including the use of colours and tones of the dyes, resist dyeing's artistic freedom gives the the possibility for developing a very unique individual style.
Susurro's style has developed into watercoloured like patterns combined with faded pastel tone colour palettes. We mainly dye monotone designs, letting harmonic tones emerge with the dyeing process. In our studio we mainly use folding, plaiting and twisting to manipulate the fabric to achieve the wanted patterns. Yet with resist dyeing there is always the element of surprise of the final results.
